Fairy tales creep deep into our psyche. My dad has a tiny very old German copy of Grimm's Fairy Tales with drawings that were downright spooky.
Earlier this month I ended up on an adventure with two of my children and we started playing out the story of Hansel & Gretel. I had the honor of being both the evil stepmother and the witch. The roots of this story apparently go back to the Great Famine of 1314-1322...
Watching my children play in the woods through the lens of imagining that they had been sent away alone was a bit terrifying. It's hard to imagine a two year old and a four old by themselves in the Forest let alone with a hungry witch about!
Although we had to use our imaginations for the witch's house as well as her demise, please know the children did outsmart her and are safe & happy at home.
